Napier Wineries
Napier is the home of the country’s oldest wineries such as Mission Estate, which was
founded by French-Catholic Missionaries in 1858. Vineyards scatter the landscape around
Taradale, while further inland in the picturesque and sheltered Dartmoor Valley, river
gravels and silts from the surrounding hills and terraces offer a variety of soil
fertilities. North out of Napier in Bay View, vineyards thrive with an ideal combination of
shelter from surrounding hills and exposure to sea breezes. A reputation for early ripening
makes this a popular location for growers.
Hawkes Bay is New Zealand's oldest winemaking region, home to New Zealand's oldest winemaking
establishments, some producing wines for over 140 years. Today the Hawkes Bay is New Zealand's
second-largest wine region, leading the country with 70% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% of
Chardonnay production. It also produces high quality Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and sweet
dessert wines, while smaller boutique wineries are constantly experimenting with new varieties.
Why not book yourself on a tour or grab a wine map and take yourself? From boutique
wineries to major operations, you're bound to find something special to swirl around your
glass.
